Water Filter Pitchers Without the Plastic Question

Short answer: a water filter pitcher is two questions, and most people only ask one. The first is whether the filter actually removes what’s in your water — lead, PFAS, the chlorine byproducts — and whether it can prove it with an NSF/ANSI 53 certification. The second is what the filtered water sits in afterward. Most pitchers are BPA-free plastic, which we score a 3; a few are glass, which is a 5. But the order matters: a certified filter in a plastic pitcher beats a beautiful glass pitcher with an uncertified filter, every time. The best answer does both, and it exists — the LifeStraw Home in glass. The better answer for a lot of kitchens skips the pitcher entirely: a certified under-sink filter, or a countertop reverse osmosis unit that fills a glass carafe.
We drink a lot of water and make a lot of coffee, and the coffee guide already told you that filtering the chlorine out is the best thing you can do for a cup. This is the rest of that story, built from the certifiers’ listings (NSF, WQA, IAPMO), the EPA’s current PFAS rule, the manufacturers’ own performance sheets, and the current Amazon listings, which is how we score everything.
What’s actually in tap water, and what a pitcher can do about it
American tap water is, on the whole, safe and well regulated. The things worth filtering are specific.
Chlorine and chloramine. The disinfectant that makes municipal water safe, and the reason it tastes like a pool. Every carbon filter handles chlorine; chloramine (used by many cities now) needs a filter that says so. This is a taste-and-smell issue, not a health one, and it’s the thing NSF/ANSI 42 covers.
Disinfection byproducts. When chlorine meets organic matter it forms trihalomethanes and similar compounds, which are regulated and which good carbon filters reduce. They show up on NSF 53 lists as “VOCs” or by name.
Lead. It isn’t in the water at the plant; it comes from old service lines and the brass in old fixtures, so your neighbor’s water and yours can differ. If your house or your city’s pipes predate the 1990s, a filter with an NSF 53 lead certification is the single most useful thing on this page.
PFAS. The forever chemicals. In 2024 the EPA set the first national limits — 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, the two best-studied compounds. In May 2026 the agency proposed keeping those two limits, giving water systems until 2031 to meet them, and withdrawing the limits it had set for four other PFAS; the comment period closed in July and the rule is in progress as we write. The practical translation: your utility has years to fix this and may not be testing for the compounds that were dropped, so the filter on your counter is the near-term answer. Carbon block and ion-exchange filters reduce PFAS; reverse osmosis does it best. Look for an NSF 53 certification that names PFOA and PFOS — or the newer “total PFAS” claim, which covers a group of seven PFAS to a combined 20 ppt limit.
Microplastics. Present in most tap water at low levels, filtered by membranes and by some carbon blocks. NSF/ANSI 401 now includes a microplastics reduction claim; look for it by name.
Fluoride. Added on purpose in most cities. Most pitchers don’t remove it, and don’t claim to; reverse osmosis and a few specialty media do. If removing fluoride is your goal, a pitcher is the wrong tool.
Bacteria and parasites. Not a municipal-water problem outside a boil advisory or a private well. LifeStraw’s membrane handles them; nothing else on this page does or needs to.
Before you buy anything, read your utility’s Consumer Confidence Report (it’s mailed or posted every July) or spend a little on a mail-in tap test. Filtering for a contaminant you don’t have is how people end up with a reverse osmosis system they didn’t need.
How to read the certifications
Four numbers do all the work, and the marketing is designed to blur them.
NSF/ANSI 42 is the aesthetic standard: chlorine, taste, odor, particles. Almost every filter has it. It is not a health claim and it says nothing about lead or PFAS.
NSF/ANSI 53 is the health standard, and it’s the one that matters. It certifies reduction of specific contaminants — lead, PFOA/PFOS, mercury, hexavalent chromium, VOCs, cysts — one at a time. A filter “certified to NSF 53” for cysts is not certified for lead. Read the list.
NSF/ANSI 58 is the reverse osmosis standard; NSF/ANSI 401 covers a list of “emerging” compounds (pharmaceuticals, BPA, some pesticides) and now microplastics. NSF P473 was the original PFOA/PFOS protocol, since folded into 53; you’ll still see it on older listings. NSF/ANSI 372 just means the product’s own materials are lead-free — useful, but it’s about the pitcher, not the water.
Now the important distinction. Certified means an accredited body — NSF, the Water Quality Association (WQA), or IAPMO — tested the filter, audits the factory, and lists the product in a public database you can search. “Tested to NSF standards” or “meets NSF/ANSI 53” means a lab the company chose ran the protocol and the company is telling you the result. That’s not nothing, and some companies publish the reports, but it isn’t the same thing, and the phrasing is chosen precisely because most people can’t tell the difference. When a brand says “independently tested” and a rival says “certified,” the rival is making the stronger claim.
The pitcher itself
Now the question this site usually asks first. A filtered-water pitcher holds cold water for a few hours to a day, gets refilled, and gets washed. That is the gentlest job plastic can have in a kitchen — no heat, no fat, no acid — which is why the filter question comes first. It’s still plastic in contact with everything you drink, all day, every day.
Plastic pitchers — Score 3. Most are SAN, polypropylene, or Tritan copolyester, all “BPA-free” by design. Tritan is the premium one; its maker’s testing finds no estrogenic activity, while an independent study years ago found some Tritan products leached estrogen-mimicking compounds after stress, and the two sides have argued since. We don’t think it’s a reason for alarm. We think it’s a reason to prefer glass when the price is close, and to replace a pitcher that’s clouded, scratched, or been through a hundred dishwasher cycles.
Glass pitchers — Score 5. Borosilicate or soda-lime, both inert. The lid and the filter housing are still plastic — the cartridge itself is a polypropylene shell full of carbon and resin, and there’s no way around that — but the water spends its hours in glass, not plastic.
Stainless gravity systems — Score 5 for the vessel. The Berkey shape: two stainless chambers, water drips through candle-style elements. Inert, big, slow, and — see below — currently in trouble on the filter side.
Under-sink and countertop systems — Score 5. No pitcher at all. Water goes from the filter to a dedicated faucet, or from a countertop RO unit into a glass carafe, and the only plastic is inside the machine for the seconds the water is passing through. This is the answer for anyone who drinks more than a pitcher a day.
For reference, our scale: 5 is a single inert material (stainless, cast iron, carbon steel, glass); 4 is a coating we’re fine with on a metal we’re fine with; 3 is a coating with a shelf life or a transparency gap, or plastic in cold contact; 2 is PTFE or aluminum in contact with food, or plastic that’s heated; 1 is a hard no.
Berkey, briefly
Berkey’s stainless gravity filters were the non-toxic-kitchen default for a decade, and we recommended one ourselves. Then the EPA decided the silver in the Black Berkey elements made them unregistered pesticide devices, issued a stop-sale order, and Berkey’s maker sued. As of this summer the case is at the Fifth Circuit, the order stands, and genuine replacement elements aren’t being manufactured. Berkey’s filters were never NSF-certified to begin with. So: don’t buy a Berkey right now, however much you like the look. If you own one, Boroux — a company that grew out of a longtime Berkey dealer — sells drop-in elements that are WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 401, and 372 (chlorine, microplastics, lead-free materials) with third-party lead and PFAS results posted on its site, though not a 53 certification. Your stainless chambers are still a 5.
The score, and why
LifeStraw Home Glass — 5. Borosilicate glass pitcher, and LifeStraw says the system is certified (by WQA) to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401, and P473 — lead, PFOA and PFOS, microplastics, pesticides — with a 0.2-micron membrane on top that catches bacteria and parasites nothing else here can. Two filters to replace: the membrane roughly yearly, the carbon every couple of months. The one pitcher that answers both questions.
AquaTru Carafe (countertop reverse osmosis) — 5. IAPMO-certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, and 401 (with the P473 PFAS protocol) for every contaminant it claims, which is rare, and the version that fills a glass carafe rather than a plastic tank. No plumbing; it sits on the counter and you fill it. RO strips minerals along with everything else — the water tastes flat to some people, and you can add a remineralizing cartridge — and the internal tanks are plastic. The most thorough filtration on this page without touching a pipe.
Aquasana Claryum 2-Stage under-sink — 5. Aquasana lists certifications to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401, and P473: lead, PFOA/PFOS, chlorine and chloramine, microplastics, and a long list of VOCs, while leaving the minerals in. Dedicated faucet, filters last six months, no pitcher, no plastic vessel, and it’s cheaper than the fancy pitchers. If you own your kitchen and drink a lot of water, this is the one we’d install.
ZeroWater 10-Cup — 3. Plastic pitcher; the filter is IAPMO-certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 for lead, hexavalent chromium, mercury, and PFOA/PFOS, and its ion-exchange stack strips dissolved solids to zero on the included meter. The cheapest certified PFAS reduction you can buy. The trade: filters die fast in hard water, the water tastes flat, and the pitcher is plastic. Buy it for the filter, not the jug.
Brita Elite (Large 10-Cup) — 3. The mainstream pitcher done right: the Elite filter is WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 for lead, PFOA/PFOS, and microplastics among others, lasts six months, and fits the pitchers everyone already owns. Two cautions. The standard Brita filter is certified to 42 only — chlorine and taste — so if PFAS or lead is your concern the filter model matters more than the pitcher. And the class action that claimed Brita overstated its filters was dismissed in 2024, a decision an appeals court upheld in April 2026; the court found “reduces” means reduces. Plastic pitcher, 3.
Clearly Filtered — 3. Tritan pitcher, premium price, and a claims list of hundreds of contaminants. Its NSF certifications are 42 and 372 — chlorine and lead-free materials. The lead, PFAS, and fluoride claims come from independent lab tests run to the 53 and 401 protocols, which the company publishes, not from certification. We think the filter is probably good; we’d rather the company put it through the certifier so we didn’t have to think. Plastic pitcher, 3.
Aarke Purifier — 4. The one pitcher here that’s glass and stainless, including the refillable steel filter cartridge, and the only one that’s dishwasher-safe top to bottom. The catch is the filter: Aarke’s granules are tested to a European lead standard and reduce chlorine and limescale, but the product is not NSF-certified for lead or PFAS, and Aarke itself says PFAS reduction “cannot be generally defined.” A 5 for materials, minus one because the filter can’t prove what the others can. Buy it if your water is already good and you want the chlorine out of a beautiful pitcher.
Should you buy a pitcher at all?
If you rent, share a kitchen, or drink a pitcher a day or less: yes, and the LifeStraw glass is the one. If you’d otherwise buy a plastic pitcher on price, the ZeroWater or the Brita Elite gets you a certified filter, and you can pour the filtered water into a glass carafe the moment it’s done if the plastic bothers you.
If you own your kitchen, drink more than that, or have a lead or PFAS result you’re actually worried about: skip the pitcher. The Aquasana under-sink costs about what a premium pitcher does, filters more, and never runs out on the counter. If you can’t touch the plumbing, the AquaTru Carafe is the countertop version of the same idea.

Why it’s here: Certified to 42, 53, 401, and P473 — lead, PFAS, chloramine, microplastics — keeps the minerals, comes with its own faucet, and takes an afternoon to install. No pitcher, no plastic, no refilling. Our pick for anyone who owns the sink.
AquaTru Carafe Countertop Reverse Osmosis — Score 5
Why it’s here: IAPMO-certified reverse osmosis that needs no plumbing and fills a glass carafe. The most complete filtration on this page, including fluoride, which nothing else here removes. Add the remineralizing cartridge if flat water bothers you.
Aarke Purifier Glass & Stainless Pitcher — Score 4
Why it’s here: Glass and stainless steel, including the filter cartridge, and it lives in the dishwasher. The filter isn’t NSF-certified for lead or PFAS, which is why it’s a 4 and not the first pick. If your water is clean and you just want the chlorine gone, it’s the best-looking way to do it.
ZeroWater 10-Cup Pitcher — Score 3
Why it’s here: Certified for lead, chromium-6, mercury, and PFOA/PFOS at the lowest price on this list. Plastic pitcher, flat-tasting water, and fast filter turnover in hard water. Pour it into glass and it’s the budget answer to the PFAS question.
Brita Large 10-Cup Pitcher with Elite Filter — Score 3
Why it’s here: If you’re going to own a Brita, own this filter: WQA-certified to 53 for lead, PFAS, and microplastics, six months per cartridge. Make sure the replacements you buy say Elite; the standard white filter is chlorine-only.
Clearly Filtered Water Filter Pitcher — Score 3
Why it’s here: For people who want the widest claims list and have read the paragraph above about certified versus tested. Tritan, well-built, expensive filters, and published lab reports in place of a 53 certification.
Skip: any pitcher without an NSF/ANSI 53 certification for the contaminant you’re worried about; “alkaline” and “mineral” pitchers (a pH gimmick on a plastic jug); a new Berkey until the filter situation resolves; the fridge-door filter that’s two years past its date; bottled water as a strategy — it’s uncertified water in a plastic bottle.
If you already own a plastic pitcher
Keep using it while you decide. Change the filter on schedule (the certification assumes you do), wash the pitcher by hand rather than in the dishwasher, and retire it when it clouds or scratches. Check which filter it takes — a Brita pitcher with an Elite filter is a certified PFAS filter; the same pitcher with the standard filter isn’t. And pour finished water into a glass carafe in the fridge if the plastic contact bothers you; it costs nothing and moves the score from a 3 to a 5 for the hours that matter.
What would change our mind
A glass pitcher, priced like a plastic one, with an NSF 53 certification for lead and total PFAS from a company that lists it in the certifier’s database. LifeStraw is closest. Clearly Filtered and Aarke could each get there by sending their filters through the certifier; we’d move both up the day it happens.

Do Brita filters remove PFAS?
The Elite filter is certified to reduce PFOA and PFOS. The standard Brita filter is not — it’s certified for chlorine, taste, and odor only.
Are plastic water filter pitchers safe?
As safe as plastic gets: cold water, brief contact, no heat. We score them a 3 and prefer glass at the same price, but the filter inside matters more than the jug around it.
Which water filter pitcher is glass?
LifeStraw Home (glass with a certified filter), Aarke Purifier (glass and steel, uncertified filter), and Boroux’s plain glass pitcher for water you’ve already filtered. Most “glass” pitchers you’ll find are infuser jugs with no real filter.
Do water filter pitchers remove microplastics?
LifeStraw’s membrane and Brita’s Elite filter carry microplastics claims; ZeroWater’s certification list doesn’t include them. Reverse osmosis removes them by default.
Do pitchers remove fluoride?
Not the certified ones on this page. Reverse osmosis does.
Is bottled water safer than filtered tap?
No. It’s tap water or spring water in a plastic bottle, tested less often than your utility’s, and it costs a hundred times more. Filter your tap.
Is a Berkey safe?
The stainless is fine. The filters are under an EPA stop-sale order, were never NSF-certified, and genuine replacements aren’t being made. We wouldn’t buy one in 2026.
The bottom line
Ask what the filter is certified to remove before you ask what the pitcher is made of. If you want one object that answers both, it’s the LifeStraw Home in glass. If you want the cheapest certified PFAS filter, it’s a ZeroWater or a Brita Elite, poured into a glass carafe. And if you own your sink, the best water on this page doesn’t come from a pitcher at all — an Aquasana under the counter or an AquaTru on top of it, certified for the things that matter, into a glass.
